What You Need to Know Before Buying Replacement Lenses
It’s a bright, sunny Memorial Day, so of course you’re at the beach playing frisbee with your friends. Your pal throws it long–too long–so you dive for it. The good news is that you caught it. The bad news is that your shades flew off in the spectacular dive, and landed beneath you. As you get up and dust yourself off, a mysterious piece of plastic peels from your shirt. You pick up your sunglasses only to realize that that little, black bit was one of the lenses.
Awesome. You have no idea how to replace sunglass lenses, nor the slightest idea if it’s even worth it. Should you just buy another pair? Questions swirl around your head at a dizzying pace–but relax–replacing sunglass lenses is cheap and easy. That being said, it might be a little tricky to find replacement sunglass lenses that fit properly.
If you can get the right pair on your first try, find these few pieces of info before buying replacement lenses.
The Model Number.
Before you get replacement lenses, you need to find the model number, which is located towards the inside of the frame’s temple piece. If you see a series of digits and letters, then you’re looking in the right place. The first code is usually the model number, which might read like “AV 0652” or “8189-Z.”
The Color Code.
Usually after the model number, you’ll find the replacement lenses’ color code, which might be as simple as “585” or it could look entirely like a different code, like “607/23.” It’s usually pretty easy to find replacement lenses for the popular sunglass styles, but if you’d like to find an alternative color, you may want to look up other color codes online, since alternatively colored replacement lenses are a bit harder to find.
The Size.
Now, most replacement lenses are one size fits all, but there are a couple exceptions. Check the bridge of the frames (the piece that rests on the nose between the two lenses) for a size. If not there, then they may be on the temple with the other codes.
